COWO - Coconut & wool bio insualtion
COWO is a coconut–wool composite that transforms two undervalued waste streams into high-performance thermal and acoustic insulation panels. Combined through a tufting process, the fibers interlock without synthetic adhesives, forming a biodegradable, breathable, and safe-to-handle material. The crimped structure of wool traps air pockets, providing thermal resistance comparable to that of mineral wool or expanded polystyrene (EPS). At the same time, the dense coconut coir layers contribute sound absorption coefficients similar to those of fiberglass or rock wool panels. This balance of thermal and acoustic performance allows COWO to be used not only in interior applications but also as infill insulation within wall assemblies and modular building systems, meeting the same performance requirements as synthetic foams while remaining non-toxic and compostable. The resulting panels demonstrate that natural fiber composites can perform on par with industrial materials while radically reducing embodied carbon, chemical additives, and end-of-life waste.
COWO exhibited as a part of the VAMO exhibition at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.
